The current wave of pervasive automation and the ever faster development and use of technologies of prediction are radically transforming all forms of labour. Jahić converted her labour as an artist – her works, research and interests of the past 16 years – into data. She then turned the decision making over to a predictive algorithm.
The relations between machines, humans and their identities are one of the constants in Sanela Jahić’s work. Part of the research and some of the exhibits for I AM SPENDING MY CAPITAL have been created in the peculiar environment of local manufacturing plants. Will we ever achieve the Owner’s genuine love towards the machines and be able to see our future in them? Will we ever be allowed to enjoy the Song of the Machines?
Distilling the essential powers claimed by various modes of creation – painting’s living evidence of touch, or the power of the word to remake the past – Jahić creates for herself situations of enhanced mechanical advantage, suspending the painting at a theoretical distance for interrogation and transformation.
“With the unyielding and rigid mechanical mind-set that is ill-suited for modern fluidity, I am an emotional and cognitive dogmatist.” Machines for Cynics and Perfectionists are three objects, which produce seemingly impossible images. Contrary to the postmodernist conventions, the machine intelligence is determined by an obsessive formalist aesthetic and flawless operation.
